Why Electrostatic Disinfection is an Excellent COVID-19 Remediation Tool
Wednesday, December 2, 2020

The coronavirus pandemic has been top of mind in 2020. At the time of this writing, the US is in the midst of another surge of positive COVID-19 cases in what officials are calling the “third wave.” This wave is expected to last several more months until a vaccine is on the market and ready for use. There are precautionary measures you and your business can take to help protect the people who occupy your facility as well as measures for immediate implementation if someone tests positive for an infectious disease like COVID-19.

What is Electrostatic Disinfection

Electrostatic disinfection is a cost-effective way to disinfect small, medium, and large spaces in a short amount of time. Electrostatic spray technology is an innovative way to apply cleaners, sanitizers, and disinfectants to treat surfaces in less time and with better coverage than traditional cleaning methods. This technology works by charging the liquid cleaner or disinfectant as it passes through the spray nozzle. A special solution is combined with air and atomized by an electrode inside the sprayer. The charged droplets repel one another and actively seek out environmental surfaces. When the droplets find environmental surfaces, they stick to them or wrap around to coat all sides. This results in a uniform coating of the cleaner or disinfectant on the surfaces sprayed, which includes hard-to-reach cracks and crevices that wiping by hand can miss. The kill time depends on the type of liquid (cleaner, sanitizer, disinfectant), its ingredients, and its strength. However, it generally takes 1 to 5 minutes to kill 99.99% of pathogens after the spray is applied to a surface. Its touchless application means zero cross contamination, which means that a room can be truly and completely sanitized or disinfected.

Benefits of Electrostatic Disinfection

  • Cracks and crevices can harbor dirt, dust, bacteria, and disease-causing germs, but are the hardest places to clean and disinfect. One of the main benefits of electrostatic spraying is its ability to wrap around and cling to all surface areas, including inside cracks and hard-to-reach crevices. This ensures that places that can’t be reached by hand are cleaned and disinfected completely.
  • All disinfectants and cleaners that are used in electrostatic machines are OSHA, EPA, and CDC approved and compliant. There are certain cleaners, sanitizers, and disinfectants that cannot be used inside an electrostatic spray machine because the liquid won’t be atomized, which means it won’t stick to and coat the surface needing to be cleaned.
  • Electrostatic spraying is safer and provides a more consistent application that does not disrupt existing areas, papers, or surfaces. Electrostatic spraying also provides a quick kill time, depending on the liquid cleaner or disinfectant being used. This technology also does not leave any residue, which is often a complaint with some traditional cleaners, sanitizers, and disinfectants that are applied with a spray bottle and wiped clean with a cloth.
  • Electrostatic spraying can disinfect large areas in a short amount of time because of the spraying aspect of the technology. One person can effectively and efficiently disinfect an entire room or large space in much less time than it would take one or more people to manually spray and wipe all the surfaces and crevices in the same space. This saves both the cleaning company and the customer money in the short and long term. Electrostatic spraying can be done quickly and easily, sometimes the same day you find out a person has been in your facility and tested positive for COVID-19, or if you are unsure if someone was sick in your facility.
